What was the purpose of the Project?

  • To survey the area and record the important historical features, the wildlife and the landscape.
  • To involve the local communities and work with the landowners of Bollington and Rainow in order to increase their interest and concern for the conservation and enhancement of the area.
  • To identify and carry out a programme of work to restore and enhance the landscape and the heritage features.
  • To maintain and improve the public footpaths and investigate the possibility of access agreements in the area.
  • To interpret the important and interesting features of the area.
  • To promote good environmental practice and management of the area.
  • To maintain and where appropriate increase the the tree cover in the area, as a contribution to The Royal Forest of Macclesfield initiative.
  • To combine and focus resources from the partner organisations and seek further funding from public sector grants, charitable donations and business support.

What was proposed?

  • A thorough survey of the area, to record the features of interest and importance.
  • The conservation of important wildlife habitats.
  • Involving the local community in improving their understanding, interest and awareness of their local area.
  • Simple informative displays such as leaflets and maps.
  • The better management and replanting of shelter belts and hedgerow trees.
  • A programme of works to maintain and repair the footpath system and protect the historical features.

What was delivered? 

  • The production of a historical map (which can be viewed from the documents section of the webiste) and a landscape history booklet. Both the map and booklet are available to purchase from Bollington Post Office or the Discovery Centre in Bollington.
  • The KRIV volunteers meet regularly on a Friday to carry out a varied programme of work which helps to maintain the historical features found in the local landscape.
  • Several miles of dry stone walls were repaired and hundreds of metres of hedges laid in the traditional Cheshire style.
  •  Many smaller features such as a dry stone well, stone footbridge and several stone stiles were also restored.
  • An archaeological investigation of Cow Lane Mill in Rainow was also carried out by local volunteers.
  • Preservation of the White Nancy hillside for future generations.
